Integrating Jira, Azure DevOps and Microsoft Planner means that tasks, statuses, hours and comments are synchronized automatically between those tools and with your company's systems, such as the ERP, the CRM or the help desk. Each team keeps working in the tool it uses, and the information reaches everyone else without having to be retyped.

In mid-sized and large companies it is common for each department to choose its own tool: development works in Azure DevOps or Jira, support uses Jira Service Management, and business units organize their tasks in Microsoft Planner within Microsoft 365. The problem appears when work passes from one team to another:
Jira, Azure DevOps and Microsoft Planner have public APIs and support webhooks, which notify another system when something changes. With these, an integration is built that:
Detects the event (a task is created, a status changes, a comment is added).
Transforms the data into the other tool's format (fields, statuses and users are not named the same way in every tool).
Creates or updates the corresponding record.
Logs the exchange and sends an alert if something fails.
Off-the-shelf commercial connectors also exist for some cases. A custom integration makes sense when there are company-specific rules, custom fields, or internal systems that need to be included.
Short answers to the most common questions on this topic.
Yes. You need to define clearly which fields are synchronized in each direction so that one change does not overwrite another.
No. The purpose of the integration is precisely to let each team keep using the tool that works for it.
Yes. As long as the in-house system has some way of exchanging data, it can be connected.
