The best place to start automating is the process that is repeated every day, is done manually and, when something goes wrong, affects the work of other departments. In most SMEs, that process sits in administration: recording sales, invoicing, tracking inventory, collecting payments or answering the same customer questions. Automating one process and making it stable works better than trying to automate everything at once.

A process repeated daily frees up more time than one done once a month.
If an order is noted on WhatsApp, then in a spreadsheet and then in the invoicing system, there is a clear opportunity.
An error in invoicing or inventory affects customers, collections and suppliers. Those processes should come first.
In a manufacturing company, the cycle runs from purchasing raw materials to delivery and payment. If each stage is recorded in a different place, no one has the full picture. A good first step is usually to bring orders, inventory and invoicing together: when an order comes in, stock is reserved; when it is delivered, it is invoiced; when it is invoiced, the customer's account is updated. Production, purchasing and reporting are added later.
Once the first process is working, you add the ones connected to it. If you started with invoicing, collections and inventory come next. If you started with customer inquiries, order taking comes next. The goal is for departments that currently work separately to end up sharing the same information.
Short answers to the most common questions on this topic.

Not necessarily. In most cases, repetitive tasks such as copying data are eliminated, and people move on to work that requires judgment: customers, suppliers, oversight.
